Pinal County, Arizona is located in the Phoenix-Mesa-Scottsdale metro area of central Arizona. The county name is believed to have been derived from an Apache term for ‘deer’, although some believe that it was named for the pine groves in the nearby mountains. Pinal County was carved out of neighboring Maricopa and Pima Counties, and was formed on February 1st, 1875. Boundary adjustments took place in 1877 and 1881. Today, it is estimated that Pinal County comprises 5,374 square miles.
